Why do laundry detergents come in liquid and powder form, and what are the benefits/disadvantages to both?

Powder is cheaper in most cases.

I myself don't know the actual difference... I prefer liquid because it is more convenient, doesn't have to dissolve, can add after clothes are already in the machine, and isn't as messy or wasteful. Why do laundry detergents come in liquid and powder form, and what are the benefits/disadvantages to both?
It's about the same difference as Coke in bottles or cans.

It's a matter of customer preference.

the older housewives only had

powder, so that's what they

like. UNLESS they have

discovered that the liquid

does not need to e dissolved.

It goes to work right away.

Also, in short cycle laundromats, there is no time

in wash cycle to dissolve the

powdered detergent and it

mostly sits on top of the clothes. Why do laundry detergents come in liquid and powder form, and what are the benefits/disadvantages to both?
To give the consumers a choice of liquids or powders.

* Powders - Advantage, more concentrated than liquids.

Disadvantage, Contains insolubles such as Silicates to help with flowability of the powder (that's why our beaches don't dissolve away~:-).

* Liquids - Adv, Dissolves easily in wash liquor.

Disadv - Less concentrated than powder detergents, (Water can hold smaller amounts of alkalies and surfactants than powdered detergents).

Good Luck!!
i find if you use liquid with dark clothes and powder with whites, the powder seems to leave white marks in dark clothes
i find that the liquid smells better, dissolves better and doesnt leave any clumps on the clothes like the powder does, i have also found that liquid cleans my clothes better since i switched to liquid laundry soap i have never went back to using powder, i would buy a no name liquid laundry soap before i would buy powder detergent and i dont buy no name laundry soap
Powder has scrubbing granulars (usually chalk), it is cheaper, if not dissolved in water prior to washing clothes will leave soap clumps on clothes, have varieties that are environmently friendly, may not rinse out of clothes if use too much. Liquid works better on the stains.

I go to large grocery stores, or Wal Mart or Sam's Club, etc.. to get a bucket of granular detergent for about $13 and lasts for years. I also buy the cheapest liquid laundry detergent I can find (usually it is Xtra). Put full strength liquid laundry detergent onto stains such as collar/wrist rings, grease/oil or food stains %26amp; rub into fabric. Then toss items into wash with 1/2 of the recommended granular detergent already mixed in the water tub. Cheap and no stains.
